EL UNIVERSAL: CRONOLOGÍA DE LA CONTROVERSIA POR LA PETICIÓN DE GEORGETOWN

• El 13 de septiembre de 2011 ElUniversal denuncia que el Gobierno de Guyana pretende extender su dominio marítimo al solicitar ante la ONU una extensión de su plataforma continental de 200 millas náuticas a 350. "Guyana ha actuado de acuerdo a sus intereses y ha actuado para asegurar que en un futuro tenga la base legal para su beneficio y proteger sus derechos", señala un comunicado de la Cancillería guyanesa. 

• El 15 de septiembre el embajador de Venezuela en Guyana, Darío Morandy, declara que la solicitud guyanesa está siendo analizado por la Dirección de Fronteras de la Cancillería venezolana. 

• El 16 de septiembre la Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD) emitió un comunicado en el que denuncia "el entreguismo" del Gobierno de Hugo Chávez a Guyana y exige que el Ejecutivo proteste ese acto unilateral. La alianza recordó que la reclamación sobre el Esequibo sigue vigente y rechazó la supuesta ambigüedad del Presidente. 

• El 26 de septiembre El Universal publica el mapa con la solicitud guyanesa de extensión de plataforma continental y reseña que ese Gobierno desconoció el reclamo venezolano en el documento entregado en la Comisión de Límites de Plataforma Continental de la ONU. 

• El 26 de septiembre la Cancillería venezolana mediante un comunicado de prensa califica a la petición guyanesa de "irregular", manifiesta preocupación porque el Gobierno guyanés no informó previamente, dice que la controversia es un legado del colonialismo y arremete contra la "burguesía" de Venezuela. 

• El 29 de septiembre El Universal publica un memorando que el embajador Darío Morandy envía a la Cancillería en mayo de 2009 informando de la petición de Guyana. El diplomático advierte "queda evidente que con esta acción Guyana estaría tratando de cerrarle a Venezuela su salida oceánica al Atlántico". 




• El 29 de septiembre el presidente de la República Hugo Chávez aparece en televisión e informa que los cancilleres de Guyana y Venezuela se reunirán al día siguiente en Trinidad. 






• El 30 de septiembre y con la presencia del buen oficiante de la ONU Norman Girvan, los cancilleres de Guyana y Venezuela se reúnen y redactan un comunicado conjunto en el que Venezuela recordó "su legítimo derecho de soberanía y jurisdicción en la fachada atlántica", las partes reconocieron que la delimitación de las fronteras marítimas es un tema pendiente y reafirmaron su compromiso con el Acuerdo de Ginebra. • On September 13, 2011 ElUniversal claims that the Government of Guyana seeks to extend its maritime domain to the UN when applying an extension of its continental shelf 200 nautical miles to 350. "Guyana has acted according to their interests and has acted to ensure that in future have the legal basis for their benefit and protect their rights," says a statement of Chancery Guyanese.


• On 15 September, Venezuela's ambassador to Guyana, Dario Morandy, the application states that Guyana is being considered by the Directorate of Border Venezuelan Foreign Ministry.


• On September 16 the Bureau of Democratic Unity (MUD) issued a statement denouncing the "appeasement" of the government of Hugo Chavez to Guyana and demands that the government protesting the unilateral act. The alliance said that the complaint of the Essequibo is still valid and dismissed the alleged ambiguity of the President.


• On September 26, El Universal published a map with the extension request Guyanese continental shelf and review that claim ignored the Venezuelan Government in the document issued by the Commission on the Limits of Continental Shelf of the United Nations.


• The September 26 by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry press release calls the request Guyanese "irregular" because the government is concerned Guyanese not previously reported, says the controversy is a legacy of colonialism and attacks against the "bourgeoisie" of Venezuela.


• On September 29, El Universal published a memorandum that Ambassador Dario Morandy sent to the Foreign Ministry in May 2009 reporting the request of Guyana.The diplomat warns "it is evident that this action would be trying to shut Guyana to Venezuela leaving the Atlantic ocean."


• On 29 September, President Hugo Chavez appears on TV and reports that the Foreign Ministers of Guyana and Venezuela will meet the next day in Trinidad.


• On September 30 and the presence of UN good officiant Norman Girvan, the foreign ministers of Guyana and Venezuela met and drafted a joint statement in which Venezuela recalled "the legitimate right of sovereignty and jurisdiction over the Atlantic" the parties acknowledged that the delimitation of maritime borders is an unresolved issue and reaffirmed their commitment to the Geneva Agreement.
