President Bharrat Jagdeo has approved the declaration of the Kanuku Mountain area, Region Nine and Shell Beach, Region One, as protected areas. Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon at a post-Cabinet media briefing at the Office of the President yesterday said that these two areas now join the existing protected areas, while investigations are ongoing by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and regional communities to include other areas within the national scheme of protected areas.
The HPS explained that protected areas legislation, which was passed in the late stages of the Ninth parliament, provides for the creation of a protected areas commission which will be centrally located and be responsible for implementing the provisions of the Act.
It also provides for local administrative bodies, which are responsible for administering and executing the management plans in areas that have been declared protective areas.
The Protected Areas Act, came at a time when the world is placing renewed focus on sustainable development given the impacts of climate change. More importantly, it brings Guyana in line with certain international obligations, one of which is the Millennium Development Goal Seven, which speaks to environmental sustainability.
It provides for the conservation of Guyana’s natural heritage and natural capital; the creation, management, and financing of a national system of protected areas; maintenance of ecosystem services of national and global importance including climate regulation; establishment of a Protected Areas Commission and a protected areas trust fund, fulfillment of Guyana’s international environmental responsibilities; public participation in protected areas and conservation.
Remark: Referring to Guyana (Cooperative Republic of Guyana ) Venezuela only recognize its territory east of the Essequibo River (Note of Appreciation from the Foreign Ministry to the new state of Guyana from May 26, 1966: "As a result, the territory of Guyana Esequiba on which Venezuela expressly limited their sovereign rights to the east with the new state of Guyana through the line of the Essequibo River, taking this from its source to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean ").http://ncnguyana.com/ncngy/index.php/travel/travel-news1749623790/getaways1242270582/1591-kanuku-mountains-shell-beach-declared-protected-areas
